In June 2024, during our association’s visit and guided tour of the Thessaloniki Railway Museum, a section of a freight car showing obvious signs of wear caught our attention. Mr. Pataras, the heart and soul of the Thessaloniki Railway Museum, explained its history and its connection to the Nazi deportations: it was part of the trains used to transport the Jewish residents of Thessaloniki to concentration and extermination camps.
We were all deeply moved. We discussed the possibility of restoring two of these historic freight cars, as well as the cost involved, since the Museum was unable to proceed with the necessary work due to a lack of financial resources. At that time, our member Mr. Savvas Cohen, a retired railroad worker, offered to cover the cost of their complete restoration with a donation.
The preservation and promotion of these historical artifacts help to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and honor its victims. They serve as a reminder of Nazi atrocities and the devastating consequences of anti-Semitism, racism, and dehumanization.
Upon completion of the restoration of the two freight cars, the Museum honored Mr. Savvas Cohen in a special ceremony held in its outdoor courtyard, attended by many dignitaries, the Vice President of our association, Ms. Rosa Polymene, and members of the association.
As part of the ceremony, OSE President Mr. Grammatidis presented Mr. Cohen, on behalf of the Museum, with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his contributions.
