The Diakopto–Kalavryta Rack Railway is one of the most remarkable achievements in Greek railway history and one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain railways. Completed in 1896, it was built to connect the coastal town of Diakopto with the historic town of Kalavryta, playing a significant role in the development of the wider region.
Stretching approximately 22 kilometres, the railway follows the breathtaking Vouraikos Gorge, passing through tunnels, historic stone bridges, and dramatic cliffs while offering unforgettable views of Greece’s natural landscape. Due to the steep gradients along the route, the railway operates using a rack-and-pinion system, a unique engineering solution that enables trains to safely navigate the mountainous terrain.
Today, the Diakopto–Kalavryta Rack Railway is one of Greece’s most popular railway attractions and tourist destinations, preserving more than 130 years of history while continuing to captivate visitors from around the world.
